Wooden Box Incense Burners

Wooden boxes for burning incense are quite popular, especially in India. Below are three examples that are identical in size and design, and vary only in construction materials.

Cultural Exchange New Age Carved Coffin Holder

The first is made from Sheesham, a wood from Northern India similar to teak. The second is in a green stained wood and the third box is in a black stain.

The green boxes actually come in a twin-pack.

They are all a similar size, and I was surprised to see they are quite large, around 12 inches in length and about 2 inches wide. This is mainly because they have storage compartments for incense sticks built in to the base.

All three have similar decoration, brass inlay with small moons, suns and stars. The coffin-type lids open to show small brass cone holders inside, as well as holes to hold sticks.

The lids have a hand-cut lattice design to allow smoke to rise, and all three are of Indian origin.

I thought the design of the following box was very clever. It is wood, with a distressed silver finish and at first glance appears to be made from silver.

If there are any spare they may make a nice gift to a young person for a pencil case, since they are all a reasonable size at around 12 inches in length.

All six have different brass inlays, and each box has a different design cut into the lid.

The next two boxes are both very simple, functional items.

There is no ornamentation, just patterns cut into the lid for smoke to rise. They are clearly basic incense boxes, and I would use them purely for this rather than as a décor object.

I tend to see a wooden incense box as a horizontal item, like a pencil case. However, this box below is designed to stand upright in a vertical position, like a tower.

This box burner is hand carved in a natural organic bamboo wood. The mid-section lifts up to show a storage compartment for sticks. When back in place it forms a tray to hold the burning incense stick and to catch the falling ash.

It is a rustic item, and because it is hand carved, each piece is unique.

Legends of the Knights Templar inspired this burner, with the lid crafted in the shape of Baphomet, the horned goat deity which they allegedly worshiped.
